Pink Floyd's Early Days

The Band's Beginning
This psychedellic, British Rock band gained their popularity in the mid 70's, when really the band had started out a decade before. The band members began as Syd Barrett (guitarist), Roger Waters (bass), Rick Wright (keyboards), and Nick Mason (drums)- all from Cambridge, England. Their leader and major song writer being "the genius" Syd Barrett. The band began experimenting in 1966 with instrumental usage, R&B focused styles, amazing reverb effects, and using different methods to make the right freaked-out noise. Syd Barrett's pop-psychedellic melodies poetically molded the lyrics and a great band was formed.

Gaining Their Fame and New Member
The group signed a contract with EMI in 1967, while their debut album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was released, with their first hits on the charts being "Arnold Layne" and "Oranges and Apples". This was the only album recorded by Syd Barrett, making it one of the different Pink Floyd albums. During the beginning of 1968, a friend of the band was added, David Gilmore. Barrett had been failing to perform in the band because of a mental illness, and they had hoped Gilmore could keep the band live. Barrett could still write some of their songs, but that didnt work too well. Within a couple of months, Barrett was out of the group.
The Floyd's Rebirth
Syd's leaving left the band without a singer, lead guitarist, song writer, and without any hope. The band looked downward on their future, when truly it was only the beginning to their shot of fame. Luckily, Gilmore was a great replacement guitarist for Syd, and the band wrote some say, even better material than Syd produced (Roger becoming the main composer). In 1968, A Saucerful of Secrets became their second album made, making one of the top ten albums on the British charts. The band used some of Barrett's techniques, only toning the music down a bit, making it more mellow in some cases.
